The Wetterlings EX line of axes was in production from 1920 to the 1960s. It was a premium product that used a special steel in a laminated bit. As well as a special heat treating process. They were the best of the best. Or at least that’s what the advertisements said.
Seriously though, they are exceptionally well-made axes. I’ve been lucky enough to own a few over the past few years and the steel on all of them has been so hard and tough that they destroyed sanding belts meant for hardened steel. Even brand new files would just skate across the steel.
The newer axes where produced with either the “EX SAW” or simply the “EX” logo as a bit stamp and a paper label. But you can be sure that they are all Wetterlings made axes. The EX mark was actually copyrighted so no other manufacturer used it.
The older models had poll stamps that read Storvik, Wetterlings or a combination.
