The title is meant to be a little cheeky. It seems every week there is the next best, latest and greatest axe being reviewed. Sometimes though you just can’t beat something traditional. A design used for centuries that has stood the test of time.
In this video, I discuss a lesser known Swedish blacksmith Per Stalberg 1839-1920. He’s still well known within Sweden as well as the forge he worked for. However, you don’t see much information outside of Sweden about these old master smiths. With this blog, I’m hoping to change that and change the way North Americans look at Swedish axes. They’re much more than just Granfors Bruks.
Per Stalberg (1839-1920) was a master smith for Urafors Yxfabrik as well as their head heat treater. He was succeeded by his son who also worked as a smith for Urafors.
The axes that he forged were so close to final shape that they required very little finish grinding. Something that was abandoned by the current forges until very recently. He was the final quality control because his name was on them. As well he did his own heat treating. Producing some of the hardest and toughest axes I have ever worked with. Many being harder than the files people use to sharpen them with. Without a doubt the axes he made rival the best made modern axes.
