If you want to flatten both water stones & natural oil stones quickly all you need is a glass plate or tile & some silicon carbide lapping powder. It literally will cost you pennies per session.
Not only is it cheap but this setup is also the only one that will work on very coarse stones. If you try to lapp a 60 grit water stone on a diamond plate you will destroy it. That’s a very expensive mistake to make. Some of the new coarse stones even have diamond grit mixed in. So be warned.
Also, SIC lapping powder will let you quickly flatten soles on bench planes & spokeshaves. Among other things.
Finally, the best part is it only costs about $10 for years worth of SIC powder. So if you aren’t impressed by this setup you’re not out very much.
