Filling The Gap.
Lamaca Handmade Axes popped up on the scene recently in order to fill a gap in the market. Hand forged axes have always been in demand but long wait times and high prices made that unattainable for most people. Not to mention it can be a cumbersome process. This is where Lamaca comes in. The idea was to make hand forged axes, made in (limited) volume, at a reasonable price point and all just a click away.
Lamaca’s Origins.
The axe community is a very tight knit community. Bringing together people with various skills. In this case, a few enterprising gentlemen from the US got together with a Canadian handle maker and a Latvian blacksmith to create their own unique brand.
The Process.
All of Lamaca’s axes are truly hand made. Despite being made in volume. Roughly in the hundreds the last time I checked.
The axe heads are forged by Mārcis Liepiņš of ML Forged. Then every handle is roughed out on an antique copy lathe, inspired by vintage handle patterns, at Owens Axe and Handle. Finally, all the parts are sent to the US to be dyed, assembled and have leather sheaths made.

The Chop Test.
I haven’t had a chance to test one of these axes (yet). But so far the reviews have only been positive. That’s saying a lot from a target market of very picky axe enthusiasts.

The Future Of Lamaca.
Time will tell where the company will head. I could see them introducing new models like a full size boys axe in the future. For now, they seem to be busy just trying to keep up with orders!
